My weird and nerdy life
After a few days have passed, sleep was had, and pictures looked through...I figured I should write about some of my adventures of May 28-31. Phoenix Comicon.
A few years ago the wife and I decided that we were done with SDCC. It had gotten too big, to out of hand, and focused more on announcing movies and such. So we decided to focus on Phoenix Comicon. We had gone years ago when it was in Glendale. Once when it was in Mesa. And a couple times when I had just moved to the Convention Center. In 2012 (the year after we quit SDCC) we started doing it right, complete passes and a hotel room. Cosplay and awesomeness. And it has been a blast every year. And it has gotten huge as well. From 2,600 in 2006 to 32,127 in 2012 to 77,818 in 2014. This year has not been announced yet.
In the past I've given things to some celebrities, screen printed shirts to Wil Wheaton a couple of years and a Scrabble tile bracelet with characters on it for voice actress Tara Strong. This year I decided to continue the awesomeness with two Art Dolls.
A Hellboy for Ron Perlman and a Judge Dredd for Karl Urban. Sadly there is no photographic evidence that I gave it to them because there was no photographs were allowed at the booths (well, I could have payed $40 at Urban's booth for a selfie).
So here is a picture of me waiting in Perlman's line with the art doll:
So on Sunday I went to the Mad Monster Party. Yes, on Mother's Day. Yes, Mom knew about this. Yes, Mom was trying to help me figure out what to make to have a table at this fun little horror con next year. Anyway. It was pretty fun. Small, but fun. If you were there an hour you'd seen the vendor's area several times. It is only their second year of doing something like this in Phoenix. Quite a few actors, voice actors, and a couple of wrestlers where there as well. Three tattoo shops were set up doing live tattoos. Didn't get to any panels, but, I'll try next year. Also, the dolls I've been working on found their way to their respective muses:
Sid Haig - Captain Spaulding It was really good to see him out after his hospital scare mid-March.
Doug Bradley - Pin Head
Sherman Howard - Bub the Zombie
John Kassir - Voice of the Crypt Keeper
All in all it was a blast. Everyone was really nice and took time to talk to the fans even though it was the last day of the convention. I'm definitely looking forward to next year and seeing if I can get a table.
So, this last weekend was pretty great.
Friday, March 13: Friday the 13th. I picked some winners for the contest for Twitter and Instagram. Not many people entered, but then again, not many people follow me. But all in all it was fun. I hope the winners enjoy their pins. And then that evening I got to go to a Phoenix Suns game with my wife (Autumn), her sister, and one of my really good friends. We had a troublesome time parking, the food was expensive, and the Suns lost, but eh...good times had by most.
Saturday, March 14: Pi day! A once in a lifetime event. But first...I got to meet Andrew WK! I had just made the doll of him earlier in the week. He had retweeted a pic of it and everything. And then I went back on to his Twitter page and saw he was going to be at Zia before a show! Holy Cow! So I met him, got pics, got autographs and showed him the Art Doll in person. He said something along the lines of "I remember seeing this earlier." That was awesome. I thought maybe he had a PR person doing his twitter, but nope, it's him! He was so excited to see it and so happy, that I ended up giving him the Art Doll of himself. That night Autumn and I hosted a Pi Day Party. So. Much. Pie.
Sunday, March 15: My dad was able to get some extra tickets to the Good Guy's car show. If you have never been to one, it is pretty amazing. We arrived a little late so most of the cars where gone, but there were still some beautiful cars there. And some odd ones.
Monday, March 16: Time to relax, right? Kind of...Spring training AZ Diamondbacks game against the White Sox! In the lawn area. We pulled out our picnic blanket. Ate Brisket Nachos had Sangria and got sun burnt all to hell. Also the D-Backs won! So great time.
Tuesday, March 17: Saint Me Day. Not much happened. But we had some awesome Lamb Stew.
Wednesday, March 18: I wrote a blog entry...
Now through March 13, 2013 I have two different contests going on for these limited edition handmade pins. Just follow the link to either my Instagram or Twitter and follow the instructions on the picture.
